Wi-Fi Explained – Standards, Channels, Interference, and How to Get Better Signal

Your Wi-Fi is slow in the bedroom but fast in the living room. Your video call freezes when the microwave turns on. In this post, we will demystify Wi-Fi – how radio waves work, why newer standards are faster, how interference hurts performance, and practical steps to improve your home network without buying expensive equipment.

1. Wi-Fi Is Radio

Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit data between your devices and a wireless router. It operates in unlicensed radio spectrum – meaning anyone can use it without a license, but must tolerate interference.

Should you upgrade? If your router is Wi-Fi 4 from 2010, yes. If you have Wi-Fi 5 and do not have gigabit internet or many devices, upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 may not be noticeable.

3. Channels, Congestion, and Interference

Each Wi-Fi band is divided into channels. In 2.4 GHz, there are 11 channels (in the US), but only channels 1, 6, and 11 are non-overlapping. If you and your neighbors all use channel 1, your packets collide, causing retransmissions and slowdowns.

The microwave oven problem: Microwaves operate at 2.45 GHz (right in the middle of Wi-Fi channel 9). When you run a microwave, it leaks radio noise across the entire 2.4 GHz band. This is why 2.4 GHz connections sometimes drop when you heat food.

In 5 GHz, there are 25 non-overlapping channels. In 6 GHz, up to 59 channels – much less congested.

4. Signal Strength, Walls, and Distance

Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance and is absorbed or reflected by obstacles. Metal is the worst (signal blocked); concrete and brick cause high attenuation; wood and drywall cause low attenuation.

Practical rule: For a typical home, 2.4 GHz might reach 150 feet; 5 GHz reaches 50–80 feet through walls; 6 GHz reaches 30–50 feet.

5. Improving Your Wi-Fi – Practical Steps (Free or Cheap)

  1. Position the router centrally and high. Place it on a shelf or table, away from corners, closets, metal objects, and large appliances.
  2. Switch to 5 GHz. If you have separate SSIDs (e.g., "MyWiFi-2.4" and "MyWiFi-5"), connect to the 5 GHz one for speed.
  3. Change the Wi-Fi channel. Log into router admin (usually 192.168.1.1), find Wi-Fi settings, and for 2.4 GHz choose channel 1, 6, or 11 (whichever is least used). Use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to see which channels are crowded.
  4. Update router firmware. Check router admin for updates – manufacturers fix bugs and improve performance.
  5. Reboot your router occasionally. A monthly reboot clears memory leaks and stale connections.

6. When to Buy New Equipment

  • Wi-Fi Extender (Repeater): Cheap ($30–80) but cuts bandwidth in half. Only good for light use (a smart speaker in a garage).
  • Mesh Wi-Fi System: Multiple nodes with seamless roaming. Best for large homes (over 2,500 sq ft), multi-story homes, or homes with thick walls ($150–500 for 2–3 nodes).
  • New Router (Wi-Fi 6 or 6E): Best for apartments or small-to-medium homes where a single good router can cover everything.
